If you are looking for a more comfortable alternative to the traditional innerspring mattress, you may have seen advertisements for foam or latex mattresses. However, you may still be unsure what exactly these mattresses are made out of and which one is right for you.
To be clear, latex is a type of foam. However, when you see the term “foam mattress,” the seller is usually referring to memory foam.
Both latex and memory foam mattresses are extremely comfortable and contour to the body.
Latex Mattresses
Latex is a material found in nature that provides elasticity, bounce, and a more generalized hug than memory foam. A primary advantage of latex is that it is hypoallergenic. However, you will need to be careful about your mattress choice if you are seeking these benefits. Some latex mattress manufacturers use synthetic latex.
Latex mattresses also tend to last longer than other mattress types, usually 20-30 years rather than the usual 5-10 for innerspring and memory foam mattresses. While they may be pricy upfront, you will be saving money in the end since you won’t have to purchase as many mattresses over your lifetime.
Memory Foam Mattress
Memory foam is a man-made foam that is made from polyurethane and other materials. It absorbs plenty of energy, can create more pressure point relief than latex, is hypoallergenic, and will contour to your body more than any other material. Memory foam also stops motion transfer better than latex, which means that you are less likely to feel anything if your partner moves around a lot while sleeping.
However, memory foam tends to be hotter than latex. If you tend to sleep better in a cool environment, you may prefer a different mattress material.
One fun fact about memory foam: it was developed by NASA to protect pilots during crashes in the 1970s. When pilots repeatedly noted how comfortable the material was, manufacturers began producing it for mass consumption in mattresses, pillows, and more.
